Psalm 91:9-10, NKJV
Beloved, you are called to dwell—to live, to abide, and to rest—in the divine protection of the Most High God... every single day of your life!.The Bible calls this "the secret place,". It's a place of great blessing and divine protection. It's a place where you find refuge, healing, rest, long life and so much more.
The secret place isn't man's idea; it's God's plan for your life. Psalm 91 tells us all about it. Verse one says:
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
God's protection isn't something you hope will come. God's protection is the place where you live and "dwell.". Sadly, there are many believers who have yet to receive this truth. They are walking around troubled and fearful. But this is why the secret place is so very important...
In the secret place, fear is banished. In the secret place, divine protectionand long life are celebrated. And it all happens because of Jesus!
n Psalm 91, we find four different and unique names of God.
- Elyon (Most High)—He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High... (Psalm 91:1)
- Shaddai (Almighty)—Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (Psalm 91:1)
- Yahweh (Lord)—I will say of the Lord... (Psalm 91:2)
- Elohim (God)—"He is my refuge and my fortress; my God..." (Psalm 91:2)
But there is one more name of God beautifully hidden in the chapter.
The last verse in the chapter (verse 16) says: "With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation." In the original Hebrew, the word "salvation" is actually Yeshua—Yeshua is the name of Jesus!
When it comes to protection, the Holy Spirit shows us Jesus. Notice how Jesus is the final word in the psalm all about protection!
God's divine protection is for you because He loves you!
5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, 6. nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
God wants you to know that you have round-the-clock protection—“You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.”
He protects you from “the terror by night”, which could refer to evils such as rape, kidnap or murder. He promises you protection from “the arrow that flies by day”. This could refer to bullets from a crazy sniper, drive-by shootings or home-made rockets fired into your territory.
God also shields you from “the pestilence that walks in darkness”, referring to viruses which you cannot see. You don’t have to be afraid of deadly viruses lurking somewhere or wonder if some deadly disease is developing in your body.
God also doesn't want you to be afraid of “the destruction that lays waste at noonday”, such as a tsunami hitting the beach resort you are at, or a bomb going off in the shopping mall you are in.
You need not be afraid because God, who neither slumbers nor sleeps, is watching over you 24 hours a day!
God’s Angels Are Watching Over You
10 No evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling; 11. for He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.
Don’t you just sense your Father’s love in these words? Like a mother hen that spreads her wings over her chicks to protect them, God will “cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge”. (Psalm 91:4) .
One of the ways He does this is with His angels. God has declared that no evil, plague or accident will befall you or even come near your dwelling “for He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways”. When He says “no”, He means “no-thing”! And if He tells His angels to “keep you in all your ways”, it means round-the-clock divine protection for you!
Beloved, your heavenly Father is watching over you. That is why no evil will befall you, nor will any plague come near your dwelling. And He has a host of angels to keep you in all your ways!
Set Your Love Upon Jesus
14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
Jesus was in a house in Bethany when a woman came to Him with an alabaster flask containing very costly fragrant oil. She poured the oil on His head. (Matthew 26:6–7) This woman loved the Lord. She had set her love upon Him. But those who were present considered what she did a great waste because the oil could have been sold for an amount equal to one year’s wages, and the money given to the poor instead. Even Jesus’ disciples were indignant and asked her, “Why this waste?” (Matthew 26:8)
But Jesus defended her, saying, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me.” (Matthew 26:10) Not only that, He accorded her the highest honor when He added, “Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.” (Matthew 26:13)
Two thousand years have passed since this woman anointed Jesus with the expensive oil. She never expected in her wildest dreams that her act of love would be told down through the ages. Many kings and rulers have come and gone. Their great acts have faded from the memories of men. But what this woman did for Jesus is still told today around the world as a memorial to her!
When you get a revelation of how much Jesus loves you, you will set your love upon Him. And when you act out of love for Him, though others may see it as a waste of time, energy or money, He will defend you and deliver you from your critics. He will also set you on high. Your ministry will become powerful and life-changing. Your work will be highly esteemed among your peers. Your company will be prominent and highly successful. And it will not just be a job that you have, but a position of influence to impact many lives.
So set your love upon Jesus. Make Him the love of your life today, and He will defend, deliver and set you on high!
He protects you so that you can see Jesus.
Like the children of Israel, who only needed to look up, and keep their eyes on the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire, all you need to do today is to look up and keep your eyes on Jesus. When you need His direction for a situation, look to Jesus who has the words of eternal life. (John 6:68) When you see symptoms of sickness in your body, look to Jesus who has borne away every disease and physical affliction. (Matthew 8:17)
When the children of Israel were bitten by serpents in the desert, God told Moses to make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole — a picture of Christ being judged on the cross. (John 3:14) Those who looked at the bronze serpent instead of their wounds were healed. (Numbers 21:9) He who looks to Jesus lives!
Beloved, look to Jesus. He is your covering, protection and deliverance!
Friend, you are kept in the secret place too. It's not just for an elite few, and it's not a position you have to earn. It's not about striving or performing—being kept in the secret place is yours just by believing and receiving what Jesus' finished work provided for you.
Ephesians 2 says that you are seated with Christ in heavenly places. And it's not because of anything you have or have not done. You're seated with Christ because of His unending grace. That's why—just like every other gift from God—it's important to remember:
The secret place of the Most High is all about your position in Christ.
You don't earn the secret place. It is a gift given by grace. Just as you freely received the gift of Jesus, you can freely dwell in the divine protection of God.
Remember, you are not living in the days of God's anger. You are living in His grace. Your sins are removed, your hope is restored and your position is secure. And it's all because of Jesus. You don't have to live with fear. The secret place is the place of divine protection. It's yours in Christ today. Thankful for God's divine protection and blessing,
